Overview

An SEO consultation can help you frame a search-related problem and decide what to investigate next. Its value depends on the question, the evidence available and the agreed output. Prepare a concise brief and ask for an action plan that your team can review and implement.

Define the decision you need to make

Start with a question that can guide the conversation. “Which product category pages should we investigate first after a drop in search clicks?” is more actionable than “make the site rank.” Identify the affected site, pages, markets and time period. Separate what you observed from what you think caused it: a change in clicks may have several explanations, and a consultation cannot establish a cause without examining appropriate evidence.

Agree on the scope before the meeting. Ask whether the session includes an audit, a written plan, a follow-up or implementation, and whether the consultant needs information in advance. A one-hour discussion and an ongoing engagement can have very different outputs. Do not assume that a consultation automatically includes technical changes, content creation or link placements.

Prepare a short discovery brief

Write down five items: your business goal; the pages or section involved; the observed issue and when it began; recent changes you know about; and the decision you need after the meeting. Add the relevant reporting period and market if they affect the question. If you have Search Console access, a relevant performance view or export can help discuss clicks and impressions, but explain its period and filters.

For example, an imaginary shop might ask why search clicks to a group of category pages changed after navigation was updated. Its brief could list three representative URLs, the date of the navigation change, the comparison period and the team able to approve changes. The consultant could then propose checks rather than assuming the navigation caused the change. This is an illustrative scenario, not an actual client diagnosis or outcome.

Share only information needed for the discussion. Keep credentials private and agree on a secure access method. Google recommends read-only Search Console access for an initial audit; do not grant broader access until an agreed task requires it. If you cannot provide a report, say so and ask what can be assessed with the evidence available.

Ask for an action-plan handoff

A useful handoff connects each recommendation to the affected page or issue and the evidence supporting it. For each proposed task, record a priority, owner, required approval, expected deliverable and a way to retest. Ask the consultant to identify dependencies: for example, a developer may need to implement a redirect while a content owner approves the text. Distinguish advice delivered during the consultation from changes actually implemented later.

If the consultant cannot yet determine the cause, the handoff can list investigations and the data needed rather than a premature conclusion. Ask what is included in the fee, when the written output will arrive and whether follow-up questions are included. If additional work is proposed, request a separate scope and price before agreeing.

Review evidence without overclaiming

Search Console reports can show clicks, impressions and other search performance data for selected periods. Compare like periods where practical and consider seasonality, geography, search type and site changes. A chart can help identify what changed, but correlation with an update does not by itself prove why it changed. Ask how the consultant will verify a proposed fix and what uncertainty remains.

Be cautious of promises of first-place rankings, secret relationships with search engines or a single score presented as proof of success. Google says nobody can guarantee a first-place result. A useful consultation should explain its reasoning and the limits of its data, even when the next step is simply to collect more evidence.

Decide what happens after the meeting

Review the action plan with the people who will approve and do the work. Select a manageable first task, agree on its owner and approval, record the change date and schedule a retest. Keep the brief, report and access record so the next review can distinguish completed work from recommendations still waiting for implementation.

If you need a publisher placement, evaluate its source, destination and terms separately. StarBacklink offers publisher selection and orders for backlinks and sponsored articles; this guide does not claim a managed SEO consultation service. No consultation, placement or tool can guarantee a particular search ranking.
