Meaning and scope
A press-release backlink is a link found on a page publishing an announcement or discussing it. An issuer's original page, a distribution service, a copied release and an independently written report are different records. A placement report can help locate pages, but its pickup count does not establish how many live anchors, indexed pages or independent editorial decisions exist.
Read the surrounding context
Start with the announcement's purpose and the evidence behind its claims. Choose a useful destination such as the original research or product documentation, not an unrelated keyword landing page. Keep the publication date, issuer and source material clear. Distribution can make the announcement available to other publishers; it does not promise that a journalist will investigate it or link to the preferred destination.
Work through the evidence
The diagram traces an invented source announcement to a distribution page and two copies. One copy contains a nofollow link to the original research, while the other shows only the URL text. The independent report is shown separately because its editorial provenance is different, not because distribution produced it. Arrows track copied content; read the destination field to find the actual link edge.
- Original announcement: Original research page and destination of the example links; not another acquired backlink.
- Distribution page: The distribution record republishes the announcement and has an explicit sponsored link to the source.
- Copy with a link: This copy retains a nofollow anchor to the original research, not a link to every other copy.
- Copy with URL text: This copy displays the source URL as plain text; the inspected fragment has no anchor.
- Separate editorial report: An independently written fictional report cites the research with no rel. Its existence is not caused or guaranteed by this distribution example.
Make a placement decision
Inspect each resulting page independently. Confirm the source URL, whether an anchor exists, its destination and rel, and whether the surrounding text is copied or independently developed. Paid links should be qualified appropriately; do not request ranking-credit links as a condition of coverage. Google's spam guidance specifically addresses optimized anchors in distributed press releases, not every factual company announcement.
Keep a reviewable record
Keep an evidence record with source, issuer, content relationship, link state, attributes, date and next action. Distinguish a submitted release from a published page and a published page from an observed link. A canonical annotation expresses a preferred representative for duplicate content; it is neither editorial approval nor proof of the URL Google selected. Inspect indexing separately if that is the question.
- Retain issuer, original announcement and supporting evidence.
- Inspect each actual page; keep copied and editorial provenance separate.
- Record anchor presence, target, rel and observation date, not only pickup counts.
- Measure communication outcomes separately from indexing and ranking claims.
Limits and next steps
Evaluate communication outcomes using defined measures, such as verified visits or enquiries, rather than converting syndicated copies into a ranking forecast. A copied release can contain a useful reference without becoming independent news coverage. These fictional files support a review discussion; they do not distribute announcements, purchase placements or compare current service prices and availability.
This page makes no account changes or provider requests. Downloads are offline reference files and remain on your device; they do not refresh or report indexing.
