Compare the same work before comparing the route
A backlink marketplace is a purchasing route; manual link building describes work that people perform. They are not clean opposites. A marketplace order can still require careful publisher research, writing and delivery checks. An agency can use a marketplace as one input, while a direct publisher relationship can include a paid placement. Compare the scope of a specific agreement, not the label on the provider.
The responsibility map holds one fictional brief constant: an existing English soil-sampling guide needs relevant readers, and the customer supplies the destination and a draft. It compares one proposed publication, with acceptance, price and continuing terms unknown. Its task leads are editable examples, not promises about what any supplier includes.
What a marketplace can centralize
A catalog can help a team compare available publishers and submit a defined order. That can reduce repeated coordination, but it does not establish that every listed publisher fits the audience or that writing, research and continuing support are included. Check the real site, the proposed page context, the required inputs and what the order actually buys. Metrics help frame questions; they do not replace editorial judgment.
In this platform, customers can select catalog publishers and supply the details required for an order. Sponsored-post requests use supplied titles and content. My links provides purchase and campaign records. Do not infer an included strategy engagement, direct publisher messaging or automatic article writing from those workflows. A marketplace for agencies can be useful as a procurement layer while the agency remains responsible for its client brief, selection and acceptance checks.
What direct publisher work leaves with your team
A direct arrangement gives your team responsibility for finding a relevant contact, explaining the reader benefit, discussing the proposed material and recording the agreement. You may need several exchanges before the scope is clear. Identify who will draft, revise and follow up; unanswered correspondence is not a publication commitment. The publisher retains the editorial decision.
Separate an unpaid editorial suggestion from paid sponsorship. “Manual” describes how the work is coordinated, not whether the relationship is paid or whether a link is appropriate. In the worked example, the buyer handles coordination directly. If a publisher also offers writing or aftercare, update those tasks only after confirming the service and its terms.
What an agency engagement can delegate
An agency agreement may include research, writing and coordination, but those deliverables need to be named. Ask for the selection rationale, draft approval process, evidence of publication and reporting format. Confirm whether subcontractors or marketplaces are used, what information you will receive, and who approves a change of publisher. The client still needs to supply accurate business context and approve the objective.
Google’s SEO selection guide recommends asking about methods, experience, communication and expected outcomes; nobody can guarantee a number-one ranking. “Are backlink marketplaces better than agencies?” therefore has no universal answer. A team with writers and reviewers may need procurement help; a team without those people may need a broader service. Neither route alone proves quality, suitability or ranking impact.
Write down terms that a displayed price cannot explain
Use the same destination, content requirements and publication request when comparing quotes. Record writing and revision scope, publisher approval, link relationship attributes, delivery evidence, any agreed duration, and cancellation or replacement conditions. Ask how a rejection or changed publisher will be handled. An unclear aftercare task should stay unassigned until someone accepts it.
Google’s link spam policies covers links created to manipulate rankings. For advertising and paid placements, its outbound-link guidance recommends sponsored; nofollow is also acceptable. Paying an agency or arranging publication manually does not remove that requirement. A qualified paid link can serve readers and advertising goals without a promised ranking benefit. Compare commercial and technical terms separately.
Accept evidence of delivery, then retain a usable record
Before accepting a delivery, compare the actual source page, intended destination, anchor, context and observed attributes with the agreement. Record the inspection date and the exact page URL. A publisher domain on an invoice is not the published page. Keep unresolved differences separate from accepted work, with a person responsible for obtaining an answer.
An uncertain order status also needs a review, not an assumption that publication failed. Check the existing order record before creating a duplicate request. After publication, retain the agreed term, contact and next action. A completed order records delivery; it does not prove that a later traffic or ranking change was caused by that placement.
Use the map to choose the missing capability
Select a route and a stage, then edit its proposed lead and scope note. The matrix keeps all three routes visible. Counts show the number of tasks assigned to each role, not hours, cost, service quality or a winner. One difficult editorial task may take more work than several coordination tasks. The publisher’s acceptance decision remains theirs even when another party coordinates the submission.
Download the selected route as TXT or all three routes as CSV or printable HTML. Changes stay in this page and disappear on reload; no order, account task or message is created. Use the exported questions in a real scope discussion. Choose the route that fills your team’s missing capability and has a clear agreement, then verify the delivery on its own evidence.
