Keep the source before opening a spreadsheet
Yes, you can import backlink data into Google Sheets. Start with the provider's original export, its download date, selected scope and filters. Keep that file unchanged. A spreadsheet is a working copy; it does not prove that a link is still present or that Google has indexed the publisher page. The preparation tool above reads your chosen file in this browser and does not upload its contents to our server.
Use the sample to learn the workflow before adding real data. It contains invented .example addresses, not purchasable publishers. The blank workbook has localized column headings and an empty review sheet. Neither download connects to a backlink provider, creates a shared Google document or refreshes itself. If a browser reload loses your preview, reopen your original file; there is no account draft here.
Choose an import route deliberately
For a CSV you already trust, use Google Sheets' file import workflow and inspect the separator and conversion settings available in that dialog. A comma inside a quoted anchor is part of one field. Splitting every comma manually can corrupt the table. If an import has already removed leading zeros or rounded an ID, changing its displayed format cannot reconstruct the source value; start again from the original.
For a text-first route, paste or select the CSV above, choose the separator if detection is ambiguous, and inspect the preview. Export XLSX. In Sheets, open File → Import, select the workbook and choose a new spreadsheet or new sheets rather than replacing existing work. Google documents these workbook import options. The exported cells are explicitly text, including values beginning with =, +, - or @. Verify the imported cells in your spreadsheet app before relying on them; this page does not execute an import inside your Google account.
Reconcile the five-record practice file
The sample contains five data records, eight columns, one entirely empty record and one exact duplicate. The header is not included in the record count. The first ID is 0007, the third data record contains the literal anchor =SUM(1,2), and the final ID is 12345678901234567890. The duplicate is intentional: this is an import exercise, not a cleaned backlink count. A quoted note contains a line break, which must remain inside one cell.
Compare these controls after import and enter your actual observations in the review sheet. A blank traffic field is unknown; the text 0 is a supplied zero. Keep the source URL's query string, fragment and Unicode characters intact. The preview's flags indicate values that spreadsheet software might interpret, not errors in the link. A JSON download provides the decoded strings for inspection; keep the original CSV too, because JSON is not a byte-for-byte archive of its encoding and quoting.
Separate raw text from deliberate data types
The date 03/04/2026 is ambiguous without the provider's convention: it could mean March 4 or April 3. Record that convention before converting a copy. Google Sheets' locale and time-zone settings affect the whole spreadsheet's default date, number and currency formatting. They do not tell you what the source intended. Keep an export timestamp distinct from a provider's first-seen date and from a later page-check date.
Create a separate analysis sheet for numeric calculations or normalized dates. Preserve the source cells alongside any derived columns, document the conversion rule and spot-check several rows. A long numeric identifier is an identifier, not a quantity to sum. This workbook deliberately contains no executable formulas or automatic hyperlinks. Review unexpected formula-like text rather than enabling it merely because it arrived in an SEO export.
Build a working view without rewriting evidence
Add a source name, export scope and observation date to your working notes. Filter a copy by destination, referring domain or link attribute as your task requires. A duplicate row may reflect export overlap; several different URLs on one host may be valid separate records. Do not remove either simply to make the total look cleaner. First decide whether the report counts link rows, unique source pages or referring domains.
If you join two exports, retain each provider and measurement date. A blank metric from one source must not become zero, and a newer number must not silently overwrite an older observation. The preparer accepts at most 2,000 data records, 40 columns, 5 MiB and 16,384 characters per cell. Split larger source files using a CSV-aware tool that respects quoted newlines; do not cut arbitrary physical lines. Unequal column counts or malformed quotes are rejected instead of silently repaired.
Keep access and refresh decisions explicit
The local preview and downloads do not make your data public. Uploading a workbook to Google Sheets is a separate action under your Google account's sharing settings. Restrict access to the people who need the client URLs and notes. Avoid publishing a confidential export merely to make an import function reach it. A static import is a snapshot; changing the original provider report does not update this workbook automatically.
IMPORTDATA and IMPORTXML are separate formula-based workflows, with their own supported inputs, access rules and refresh behavior. If one fails, record the exact formula, error, source format and whether the source requires a login. Consult Google's import-function documentation. Repeatedly reloading this page does not repair the formula or restore a provider session, and the tool does not test those remote URLs.
Distinguish import problems from indexing problems
A file that will not parse, a spreadsheet import formula that fails, and a publisher URL missing from search results are three different problems. For the first, compare delimiter, encoding, quoting and row width with the original file. For the second, inspect the formula and source access. For the third, review the actual webpage and the evidence available to its owner. Putting a URL in a sheet does not submit or guarantee its indexing.
If you manage the relevant site, use its Search Console property and Google's documented URL inspection or sitemap workflow as appropriate. You cannot request indexing of arbitrary publisher URLs through a property you do not control; even an eligible request is not a guarantee. The indexing-related keywords behind this guide remain partly ambiguous: it does not diagnose a specific third-party automation service. Continue with the analysis guide, report builder or indexing evidence worksheet according to the problem you actually have.
