Overview
A free WordPress backlink plugin can mean an outbound-link inventory, checking known incoming links or distributing content through another service. These are different jobs. We examined AnyBacklink 1.0.0 and Backlia 1.4.3 in a private WordPress 6.8 installation with PHP 8.2.31. External requests were blocked and mail suppressed. The findings support a scoped comparison, not a universal best-plugin award or a ranking claim.
Define the task before comparing plugins
An outbound inventory reads links from your own content. A known-link checker inspects pages you supply. A discovery index attempts to find incoming links you do not already know about. Content distribution publishes or submits material through a service. A plugin that performs one task should not be presented as doing all four.
Our site also provides a WordPress connector for managing known-link monitoring. We are its publisher, so readers should know this relationship. Its existing setup guide explains account access and monitoring limits. The independent-plugin checks here examine local behavior and account requirements; they do not establish that our connector outperforms another product or discovers the entire web.
What the AnyBacklink checks showed
AnyBacklink activated and deactivated in the isolated installation. We inserted a controlled published post with two external links, including sponsored and nofollow attributes, then ran the scanner. It returned two links and one sponsored category. A separate parser test retained repeated external URLs while excluding the current host, its subdomain and a relative link. This is a check of supplied content, not an internet-wide discovery test.
The scanner chooses a single category, prioritizing sponsored, then ugc, then nofollow, otherwise follow. A sponsored+nofollow link therefore appears in one category rather than retaining a complete rel-token inventory. The source caps the query at 500 recently modified published public content items and stores at most 2,000 detailed link rows; totals can differ from displayed details. Stored post content can also differ from rendered theme output.
Distinguish local reporting from external checks
AnyBacklink's incoming-link checker calls an external service with the supplied page and target. Our blocked-network integration returned an error rather than a missing-link result. Controlled transport tests also checked connection failure, HTTP 503, an unrecognized response and a supplied success response. These validate local error handling; they do not measure the vendor service's availability or accuracy.
The admin callback rendered under WordPress, and its uninstall routine removed a seeded saved-scan transient. These checks do not cover every admin interaction, browser layout, unusual theme or future version. If your priority is a local outbound inventory, the observed behavior is relevant. If your priority is incoming-link discovery, do not treat a supplied-URL check as an independent discovery index.
What the Backlia checks showed
Backlia activated and deactivated successfully. Activation left automatic publishing disabled in our test. Its settings callback rendered without connecting an account. We did not create an account, submit content, create a network link or test service-backed delivery. The official listing describes account-based content distribution, with a limited free allowance; verify current terms before choosing it.
This means the observed local lifecycle is available evidence, while delivery, network audience and search impact remain untested. Read the service's data-transfer and account requirements before enabling publishing actions. If your goal is to inspect existing incoming links, content distribution is a different task. Do not compare a generated listing count directly with monitored or discovered backlink counts.
Use a small acceptance checklist
Choose one real task and test it on a non-production copy. Record plugin version, WordPress and PHP versions, source of the archive, settings, expected output and observed output. Include a followed link, a sponsored+nofollow link, an internal link and a repeated link when checking an inventory. Test unavailable source pages separately from genuinely absent links when evaluating a checker.
Review which data leaves the site, what requires an account, which actions happen automatically, what persists after deactivation and what uninstall removes. A free installation is not necessarily a free external service without limits. Confirm current pricing and service terms rather than relying on an old screenshot. Avoid promises that a plugin will generate ranking value; paid or exchanged placements need appropriate disclosure and link qualification.
