Meaning and scope

A sitewide backlink is an external link repeated through a shared element such as a footer or sidebar. The term describes placement breadth, not a separate HTML link type or a guaranteed ranking effect. A template can also contain internal navigation; check the source and target before calling that link a backlink to another site. Repetition alone does not explain the commercial or editorial relationship.

Read the surrounding context

Look at the template and the reader's task together. A relevant attribution, a paid promotion and an unrelated keyword-rich footer can occupy the same visual position while having different purposes. Google's spam examples include widely distributed footer or template links across sites; that is not a statement that every footer link is forbidden. Record why the link is present and whether compensation is involved.

Work through the evidence

The worked register contains three inspected pages on journal.example with the same paid footer placement, plus one contextual reference on makers.example. That makes four observed linking pages on two exact source hosts. A fifth proposed URL has not been inspected and is excluded. The sample has one link per inspected page; it does not claim that every page on either host was crawled.

  • Footer: news page: Paid footer on the first inspected page; sponsored is explicit.
  • Footer: events page: The same paid template on a second URL. It adds a page, not another host.
  • Footer: about page: The third inspected URL repeats the same footer and destination.
  • Contextual reference: A separate host contains a contextual reference; no rel appears in this example.
  • Uninspected proposal: This proposed page has not been checked. It contributes no observed page, host or link.

Make a placement decision

Treat counts as separate measurements. Four source pages are not four independent recommendations, and two hostnames are not necessarily two independently owned publishers. This example does not merge subdomains into registrable domains or model Google's weighting. Keep the crawl scope, dates and duplication rules beside any total so a later report can explain why its number differs.

Keep a reviewable record

Review the exact source URL, destination, anchor, template location and rel attributes. For paid placements, use appropriate sponsored or nofollow qualification. Inspect representative pages to understand the pattern, then describe the actual sample rather than claiming whole-site coverage. If the template is changed, check affected page types again; one corrected URL is not proof that all instances were corrected.

  • Record exact source and destination before classifying internal or external.
  • Keep observed page count, exact hosts and coverage scope separate.
  • Review relevance, payment and actual rel attributes on the template.
  • After a template change, recheck affected page types and date the result.

Limits and next steps

Keep unknown proposals outside observed totals and preserve earlier observations when a placement disappears. A missing instance can reflect a different template or access condition; it does not alone prove a domain-wide removal. Use the downloadable cases to agree counting rules with a reviewer. They are fictional evidence, not an offer to place footer links or a prediction of SEO value.
