Purpose and scope
A guest-post backlink appears in content written by a contributor for another publisher. Guest authorship describes who wrote the content, not whether the link was paid, independently selected or useful. This guide evaluates placement context; article preparation and purchase instructions remain on their existing pages.
Read the primary evidence
Google’s link guidance separates paid qualification from ordinary linking and warns about manipulative link schemes. Assess the article’s purpose and commercial terms as well as the rendered anchor. A sponsored label does not replace useful content; an edited article does not erase a payment agreement.

Work through the examples
G1 cites a procedure in an unpaid contribution whose host can change references. G2 pays for a feature and discloses it. G3 identifies an employer in the biography, a different location from a supporting body citation. G4 is only an accepted draft; public source, final markup and verified delivery are missing.
Authored teaching examples. Publishers, agreements and events are fictional; these are not available placements or observed results.
| Case or check | Relationship evidence | What remains unknown | Next action |
|---|---|---|---|
| An unpaid contribution with a source | The fictional host accepts an unpaid contribution and can revise or remove references. This excerpt cites a relevant procedure without a link requirement. | Guest authorship alone does not prove the independence of every self-reference or any future search benefit. | Check topic fit, author responsibility and the host’s selection process; retain the published paragraph. |
| A sponsored guest feature | A fee buys the fictional feature. The sample labels sponsorship and qualifies the link with sponsored; an editor still reviews readability. | Editing does not turn a purchased placement into an independent endorsement, and the fee does not guarantee readers. | Agree on disclosure and deliverables, then check the visible label and actual link after publication. |
| A company link in an author biography | The reference is in the byline biography, not evidence supporting the article’s main claim. The sample uses nofollow. | A biography link is not equivalent to an in-body citation; its presence alone reveals no referral traffic. | Record the location accurately and assess whether the identity information helps the article’s readers. |
| An accepted draft is not a live link | An editor has acknowledged the draft, but no public URL or final markup is available. Payment and final link qualification are unverified. | Acceptance, a proposed anchor and a preview do not prove a published placement. | Keep the job pending until a public source, date and actual link can be checked; do not report the draft as delivered. |
| Publication evidence | Source URL, observation date and final HTML | Not verified | Record the currently accessible page; a draft is not delivery. |
| Outcome evidence | Visits and search performance | Not verified | Measure separately; publication timing alone does not establish cause. |
Make the decision explicit
Before committing, establish the reader, topic, responsible author and publisher’s right to edit. Specify whether a proposed link belongs in the article or biography and how commercial relationships will be disclosed. Ask for concrete deliverables and a review process; do not buy a promise of a ranking position.
Keep a reproducible record
After publication, check the public URL, paragraph, destination, anchor, qualification and disclosure. Preserve the observation date and any unresolved mismatch with agreed terms. Use the blank worksheet to record your own case. A preview or acceptance email belongs in the pending record until the public page is checked.
Limits and follow-up
These examples do not establish publisher availability, a refund entitlement or guaranteed link permanence. Traffic and ranking effects require separate observations and cannot be attributed to the guest link from timing alone. Keep the delivery record precise and route future source checks to the existing monitoring workflow.
