Medium backlinks: attribution, profile links and canonical checks

Original fictional publishing example, not a Medium account capture. The escaped canonical code does not change this page or publish a story.

  1. Original field notes

The fictional resource at studio.example/field-notes is the intended original.

  2. Medium story

An authorized copy can contain a visible credit and separate canonical metadata.

  3. Author profile

The bio or About page can provide an additional relevant reader route.

How to use the matrix

Our fictional author first publishes field-recording notes at studio.example/field-notes, then reuses their own writing on Medium. The story credits and visibly links to those notes; the author profile can introduce the studio. Medium’s import tool adds a canonical reference to the source and backdates the imported story to its original publication date. Review the imported draft before publishing, and import only material you have the right to reuse.

A visible attribution link and a canonical annotation perform different jobs. The story author can set the canonical under More settings, Advanced Settings and the option for a story originally published elsewhere, then save and publish the change. Inspect the published source for the intended absolute canonical URL. Google treats it as a preference signal for duplicate or similar content, not a command, redirect or guaranteed choice of the original.

Review checklist

Keep separate entries for the clickable story link, profile link and canonical metadata: source URL, surface, visible label, actual destination, observed rel values, date and next action. In the fictional example, the canonical refers to the original article, not an unrelated studio homepage. Test the reader route in a signed-out browser and the relevant mobile view. Confirm the final destination after redirects; a successful load still does not prove a measured referral.
